Coon lands spot in Greco Finals, 7 Cadets earn All-American honors
7/18 - Festivities got underway today at the FargoDome as Cadets hit the
mat in Greco-Roman action. Team Michigan only entered 11 wrestlers in
the Cadet Greco-Roman competition and while that lacked in quanity, they
definitely made up for it with quality as 7 of the 11 wrestlers who competed
have locked up all-american honors and advanced to the second day of
action.
Four wrestlers remain unbeaten, including Adam Coon who is 6-0 at and
has already clinched 1st place in his pool and a spot in the 215lb Greco-
Roman National Finals. Coon won 5 of his 6 matches with 1st period falls
and it is not yet determined who he will wrestle in the finals.
Jacob Schmitt, Josh Pennell, and Kevin Beazley also went undefeated on
the first day of action and are both now just one win away from landing
themselves spots in the finals. Schmitt survived a couple three period
barn-burners to lock up his 3rd all-american honor in as many tries,
including a close win over Marshawn Sharp of Georgia who was 7-1 at the
Cadet Duals wrestling up at 112. Schmitt is set for a showdown with
nationally ranked Anthony Ashnault of New Jersey, who he beat in three
periods at the Cadet Freestyle Duals last month. Ashnault is also
unbeated thus far in the tournament.
Beazley, who locked up his first ever Fargo all-american honor today,
going 6-0 including a three period win over returning Cadet Greco
All-American Connor King of Colorado. Beazley is the only undefeated w
restler left in his pool and can now earn a spot in the championship finals with a win over Matt Reed of Kansas tomorrow.
Pennell has five wrestlers still remaining in his 125lb pool, however, after winning his first 6 matches he will now receive a bye and after the next round is guaranteed to be in the Top 6. Pennell will have one or two more matches tomorrow to earn a spot in the finals, where he would likely meet up with former Michigan standout Ben Whitford of Illinois.
Martin Rodriguez, Payne Hayden, and Travis Curley lost one match today, but remain alive and have locked up all-american status. Rodriguez is 3-1 at 98lbs and Hayden is 4-1 at 140lbs and with 4 wrestlers remaining in each of their pools, they are both guaranteed to finish Top 8.
Curley’s pool is all wrapped up and he will be wrestling for 5th place tomorrow after finishing in a three way tie atop his pool. Curley beat John Austin Jones of Alabama, who will be wrestling in the finals tomorrow, however, he lost to Jason Grimes of Georgia. Jones beat Grimes, creating a three-way tie, and Curley finished 3rd based on the points criteria, landing him in the 5th-6th place match.
The final session of Cadet Greco action will go down tomorrow morning at 9:30am as they wrestle at the same time as the first session of the Junior Greco tournament. The Cadet Greco-Roman finals will take place at 2:00pm tomorrow and will be broadcast live on the USA Wrestling U-Stream channel.
