Smith, Humes, Dorulla among big winners at MWA Classic
6/19 - The featured matchup of last night's MWA Classic was
expected to be the opening bout of the night between 3x state
champs Nick Smith and BJ Suitor, and they did not dissapoint.
The night started out with a bang as Smith, who won the 119lb D3
title the past three years, broke a 6-6 tie cutting Suitor loose late in
the third period before scoring the winning takedown in the final
10 seconds of the match. Suitor won state titles his first three
years in school at 103, 103, and 112 and this matchup was
supposed to be the match to watch at the Palace this year.
Two 2010 state champs fell last night and the Humes brothers
were on both ends of the stick, so to speak. At 145lbs, Nick
Humes, who finished 4th in the state in a packed Division 2 145lb
weight class this year, knocked off Division1 state champ Doug
Eldridge 10-3. Then at 171lbs, in a battle of the D1 and D2 state
champions, 2x champ Jake Dorulla of Rockford edged D2 champ
Tyler Humes 5-4.
