MIchigan preps shine at Northeast Regional
5/2 - Three Michigan high school standouts won Northeast Regional Titles this
weekend in Brockport, NY.
Alex Calandrino of Howell, Joe Rendina of Dundee, and Devin Pommerenke of
Rogers City won titles in the Junior Freestyle Division.
Pommerenke, a 2x Division 4 State Champ, put together arguably the most
impressive performance of his career, knocking of two wrestlers currently ranked
top 20 nationally by InterMat. Pommerenke's first victim was #15 Brooks Black fo
Blair Academy, NJ, who he beat in three periods to win his pool. Then in the
finals, the Rogers City junior squared off with New York state champ Lance
Moore, who is ranked 7th right now at 285lbs nationally. After losing the first
period 3-0, Pommerenke came back to win the 2nd period 2-0 and then finished
Moore off with a fall in the third period.
Rendina, who was an undefeated Division 3 State Champion this year, won the
130lb title with a three period finals win over North Carolina All-Stater Joe
Morrison. However, Rendina's biggest win of the day came in his pool finale
when he downed former Cadet Freestyle All-American and multiple PA state
placer Cameron Throckmorton 2-1, 2-0.
Calandrino went 3-0 at 119lbs to win the Regional title with his closest match coming in form of a three period win over National Prep Runner-Up Max Hvolbeck of Blair Academy, NJ.
With their Regional Titles, Calandrino, Pommernenke, and Rendina have all earned valuable seeding criteria heading into Fargo this summer for the Junior Freestyle and Greco Nationals. Pommerenke and Calandrino are returning Greco All-Americans and Rendina is a former FILA Cadet All-American.
The fourth Michigan prep to place was Division 1 All-Stater Anthony Abro of Canton who finished 4th at 189lbs. Abro lost his opening round match to #4 ranked Tyler Beckwith of NY, who is a returning Junior Freestyle All-American, the bounced back with two wins to advance to the top 4.
