7 Michigan Seniors earn NHSCA All-American Honors

Senior National/FloNational Coverage Page

4/2 - Seven Michiganders achieved All-American status today at the NHSCA
Senior Nationals.  It was a particularly strong showing for Dundee who has four
All-Americans in Joe Rendina (125), Joey White (125), Chris Rau (130), and
Justin Heiserman (189).

Two Michiganders advanced to the Championships semifinals, falling just short of
the finals.  Joey White lost in the semifinals to Chris Perez of New York, the
same wrestler who knocked off Joe Rendina, White's teammate, in the
Quarterfinals.

Brian Gibbs of Bedford beat 2x New York State Champ Derek Hayman in the
Quarterfinals to advance to the semis before falling to 3x Colorado State champ
Travis Himmelman.

Three Michiganders came back from early round losses to win 5 straight and
earn a spot in the All-American rounds.  Esteban Gonzales (119), Chris Rau
(130), and Matt Frisch (145) put together 5-0 records on Day 2 to move in to the
Top 8 in their respective weight classes.  Among Frisch's 5 wins was a victory
over 3x Oklahoma State Champ Devin Aguirre.

All seven Michigan wrestlers are alive in the consolation bracket, and will have a chance to wrestle back to third place tomorrow.  Check back tomorrow to see how Michigan fares on the final day of competition in Virginia Beach.
