Michigan Cadet Team goes 7-1 at Freestyle Duals

6/16 - The Michigan Cadet National Team finished with a strong 7-1 record at the
Cadet Freestyle Duals, with their lone loss coming to eventual Runner-Up
Pennsylvania. However, the Michigan team was kept out of the Top 8 and an All-
American finish due to a very tough Pool Draw.
On Saturday in Pool action, Michigan opened with a win over Ohio before falling to
Pennsylvania in the semifinals. Their chance to wrestle back for true second in
the pool, and a spot in the Championship Bracket on Sunday, was halted when
Pennslyvania lost to eventual Champions Illinois in the pool finals. PA and IL
would go on to both make the Tournament Finals on Sunday, finishing 1st and
2nd, while Michigan, left out of the Championship bracket, finished with four
dominant wins on Sunday to win the Copper/Bronze Pool.
Michigan scored sound wins over Tenessee, PA Blue, New Jersey, and Utah to
finish the tournament 7-1. Standout individual performances were turned by
undefeated wrestlers - Ben Freeman (100), Conner Myers (138), Jelani Embree
(170), and Mason Litz (182). All four of these wrestlers completed the four day
gauntlet, going perfect through all of Freestyle and Greco-Roman Competetion.
Freeman and Embree, both incoming freshman next year, lived up to their hype
with stellar showings this weekend and proved to be threats to watch for in Fargo
next month. Among Freemans big wins was an 11-7 win over returning double
Fargo All-American Joey Prata of Virginia. Embree, meanwhile, finished the four days of wrestling without going the full distance in any match, ending them all by fall or tech-fall. Among the notable wins for him, a first period fall over Pennsylvania 3AAA State Qualifier Josh Collelo.
Litz and Myers both came in off of All-State showings this year at the Division 2 State Tournament and both enjoyed the best national showings of their careers. Litz scored a big win over Drew Phipps of PA, a 3AAA State Qualifier ranked by InterMat as one of the Top 20 freshmen in the country.
