Churella & Rizgallah advances to US Open Freestyle Finals

4/24 - The 2010 US Open concluded today with two Michiganders
finishing runner up.

Former University of Michigan All-American Josh Churella came out
firing in the 66kg finals with a takedown to win the first period against
Jared Frayer.  He then rattled off another takedown to take a 1-0 lead in
the 2nd period.  The tide turned late in the period when Churella got in
deep again but was caught by Frayer in a chest lock turn.

The match shifter in Frayer's direction following that turn as he won the
period and then went on to score with another shot counter in the
third period to win the match.

Michigan State sophomore Joe Rizgallah made it to the Greco-Roman
finals at 120kg, but fell in two periods to Brandon Rupp to finish runner
up.

Returning US Open champ Nick Simmons was upset in the 55kg quarterfinals, falling to NCAA Champ Angel Escobedo.  Simmons then battled back before losing to returning World Team member Danny Felix in a rematch of last year's World Team Trials.  The MSU grad then downed high school phenom Logan Stieber in straight periods to finish 5th.

Former CMU All-American Brandon Sinnott and East Kentwood grad Jake Bohn finished 8th to earn All-American honors.  Bohn finished 8th in Greco at 66kg and Sinnott ended up 8th at 84kg.

Wrestling continues tommorow with the FILA Junior Freestyle National Championships at 9am and will complete tommorow.
