Arthur & Powell become double all-americans at Kids Nationals
7/2 - A handful of Michigan youth wrestlers made the cross-country haul to Orem, Utah this week for the Asics Kids Freestyle & Greco-Roman National Championships.
Four Michiganders came home with all-american honors, including two Schoolboys who placed in both styles, earning double All-American honors.
Shon Powell was the only Michigan athlete to make the finals, as he finished 2nd in freestyle at 128lbs. Powell cruised through his freestyle pool, winning his first five matches without surrendering a single period. However, in the freestyle finals he fell to Abraham Rodriguez of Oregon 1-0, 5-0. Powell beat Rodriguez in the consolation finals of the Greco tournament to finish 3rd. This is the 2nd straight year that Powell has finished as Freestyle National Runner-Up.
Angus Arthur of DeWitt placed in both styles as well, finishing 4th in Freestyle and 6th and Greco at 120lbs. Arthur entered the week as a returning double champ after winning both styles last year at Novice 100lbs.
Also earning all-american honors was Nick Brandt and Daneil Guillen in the Intermediate division. Guillen finished 8th in freestyle at 65lbs while Brandt was 6th in greco at 80lbs.
