Spartans, Eagles score wins on Week 2

MICHIGAN STATE 24, EASTERN MICHIGAN 9

On paper, this one looked like it could go either way. However, when it was all

said and done, the Spartans rolled to a huge victory, winning seven of ten weights.

After losing the first bout of the dual at 149, Michigan State strung together six straight

victories. Ryan Watts scored a late takedown on Brandon Zeerip to pull out a 3-2

victory at 157. That match was followed up with back-to-back overtime wins by the

Brothers Nash. Bobby won in 2OT at 165, Kevin in 1 at 174. The next two matches,

frankly, decided the dual. Long time rivals John Rizqallah and Phillip Joseph squared

off at 184. With the match tied at 2 heading into the 3rd period, Rizqallah rode Joseph

out to secure his riding time point and added a late turn to make it 6-2. At 197 Nick

McDiarmid defeated his second top-20 ranked opponent in five days with a 6-2 decision

over #18 Nick Whitenburg. After an early takedown, McDiarmid rode tough on top and

clocked over three minutes of riding time, and also added a late takedown to put it out

of reach. EMU then bounced back at 125 and 133 with solid victories from Jared

Germaine and Vinnie Pizzuto. The Eagles looked to add another win in the final bout

with Nick Barber carrying a 3-1 lead late into the third period, but Bedford native Brian

Gibbs took Barber down to his back, cementing a fall and putting an exclamation

point on the dual for the home crowd in East Lansing.

#23 STANFORD 21, #19 MICHIGAN 13

The Stanford Cardinal rolled into Ann Arbor and took a hard-fought win from the Wolverines in their Sunday matinee dual. After splitting the first two matches, two top-20 foes met at 125- #17 Evan Silver for Stanford, and #11 Conor Youtsey for Michigan. With the match tied late, Youtsey cut Silver loose but could not manage a takedown in the waning seconds of the third period, and the Blair Academy product, Silver, took the 4-3 win. #3 Ryan Mango looked explosive as always in his 10-5 win over Rossi Bruno, extending Stanford’s lead to 9-3. The Maize and Blue would bounce back, however, winning at 141 and 149. Portage Central State Champion Angelo Latora looked solid in his 4-2 win, and #7 Eric Grajales carried some momentum from last weeks big win into this match, winning a decisive 7-3 bout. 157 was really where this one was won. UM’s Jake Salazar jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a cradle in the first period, but NCAA Qualifier Bret Baumbach flipped the script and put Salazar on his back and secured a fall. At 165, #6 Dan Yates fell to 20th ranked, and undefeated, redshirt freshman Jim Wilson 6-3. Down nine with two matches to go, Michigan couldn’t quite pull off the comeback and ultimately fell 21-13 to the visiting Cardinal.

EASTERN MICHIGAN 18, #23 STANFORD 16

Shortly after Stanford’s first dual of the day, they made the trip down Washtenaw Avenue to Eastern Michigan for part two of their doubleheader. And what a dual it turned out to be. #18 Nick Whitenburg got the Eagles on the board early with a 6-2 decision over Michael Sojka. After falling at heavyweight, Jared Germaine put EMU back on top with a dominating 9-3 performance. Many thought #17 Evan Silver would wrestle here for the Cardinal, but he seemed to suffer an injury in the dual prior, and thus, did not compete. Germaine had previously defeated Silver 6-4 in their only collegiate meeting at the 2011 Midlands. Nick Barber responded to a loss at 133 with a 12-6 win to once again give the Eagles the lead after five matches, 9-6. The Cardinal would go on to win the next three bouts, one by major decision, to give them the 16-9 advantage with just two weights remaining. Hillsdale native Mike Curby scored a takedown and added a late stalling point to secure a 4-3 win over Zach Nevills, a former 4x CA state placewinner, to give Eastern a chance with one weight to go. Fifth year senior and 2x NCAA Qualifier Phillip Joseph gave the Eagle faithful much to cheer about as he hit a far ankle pick to his opponent’s back, and pinned Thomas Kimbrell in just :59 to give the Eagles a huge upset win, 18-16.

#23 STANFORD 18, #25 CENTRAL MICHIGAN 13

On a night when CMU honored its 1999 National Champion Casey Cunningham, the unofficially-named Borrelli Bowl took place, with the younger Borrelli coming away the victor. Stanford hopped out to a quick 9-0 lead after the first three matches with three close decisions. Then at 125, #15 Corey Keener continued his strong start to the season with a dominating 11-4 win over Tommy Pawelski. 133 held the premiere matchup of the night, with #3 Ryan Mango squaring off with #13 Joe Roth. Mango scored two takedowns and pulled off a 5-3 victory. #16 ranked Zach Horan tried to sway the momentum back in favor of the Chippewas as he hammered Peter Russo 14-5 at 141. That match was followed by a decisive 7-1 win for CMU Senior Scott Mattingly at 149. Two NCAA Qualifiers met up at 157, Stanford’s Bret Baumbach and CMU’s Luke Smith. The two got into a scramble situation early, as Smith was awarded a takedown. However, Baumbach slipped through and held Smith on his back for a quick two count and took a 4-2 lead after one. From there, he rode Smith for over three minutes and secured a 7-2 win. The Cardinal and Chippewas split the final two matches of the dual, making the final 18-13, and earning Stanford Head Coach Jason Borrelli temporary bragging rights over his father, coach, and mentor, Tom.

OUT OF STATERS IN ACTION

Paul Hancock (Army/Dearborn Fordson): Had a strong showing at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, taking 4th place with a 4-2 record.

Taylor Grenawalt (Brown/Haslett): Posted a 1-2 record at the Navy Classic.

Galloway Thurston (Brown/St. Ignace): Picked up his first win of the young season, and went 1-2 at the Navy Classic.

Matt Frisch (Citadel/Oxford): Won three matches, two via major decision for the Bulldogs at the Navy Classic.

Nathan Wynkoop (Cleveland State/Ogemaw Heights): Scored a tech fall in his lone win at the Navy Classic.

Josh Houldsworth (Columbia/Holly): Went 3-2, placed 4th, at the NYS Championships. Scored a 5-1 victory over NCAA Qualifier Coleman Gracey of Army.

Gabe Dean (Cornell/Lowell): Had a dominating weekend which saw him win by fall in a dual over Binghamton and then win the NYS Championship, going 4-0 with 3 falls and a tech.

Craig Eifert (Cornell/Mason): Placed second at NYS Championship, after posting a 4-1 record and defeating Houldsworth 8-4 before falling to NCAA Qualifier Joe Booth of Hofstra in the finals.

Taylor Simaz (Cornell/Allegan): Wrestling in the “B” division at the NYS Championship, earned three victories and placed 2nd, after falling to teammated Chris Dowdy in the finals.

Lelund Weatherspoon (Iowa State/Napoleon): Continued his strong season, this time wrestling at 174 against Old Dominion. With the Cyclones up 17-15 going into the final match, he knocked off NCAA Qualifier Billy Curling 6-2 to give the Clones the win.

Tim Lambert (Nebraska/Forest Hills Eastern): Improved to 2-0 on the year with a major decision over SDSU’s Isaac Andrade, 9-1.

Gabe Morse (Northern Illinois/Lowell): Won two tight decision, 8-7 and 9-7, over Northern Iowa and North Dakota State, respectively.

Andrew Morse (Northern Illinois/Lowell): Suffered two tough defeats, 2-1 to Jarrett Jensen of UNI, and then was pinned by NDSU’s Matt Gray in 1:16.

Shawn Scott (Northern Illinois/Holly): Split his matches over the weekend, falling 6-5 against UNI, but rebounding to score a 21-4 tech fall over NDSU.

Kevin Beazley (Old Dominion/DCC): In lone match of the weekend, fell to Chris Penny of Virginia Tech, 5-4.

Ken Bade (Pennsylvania/DCC): Fell to Tyler Goodwin in dual action against Maryland on Friday. Went 1-2 at the Keystone Classic the following day.
