Runner-Up Marcicki among 6 Cadets to earn All-American status
7/18 – Six All-Americans helped lead Michigan to a sixth place team finish in
Cadet Greco Roman competition in Fargo on Monday. The cadets racked up
32 points to finish ahead of several top tier states including Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa. It was an all around team performance for Team
Michigan, who had ten wrestlers record at least four victories.
Michigan’s highest finisher was Detroit Catholic Central state champion
Logan Marcicki, who placed 2nd in the 140lbs weight class. Marcicki was
dominant in his path to the finals, recording five pins and three decisions. In
the finals, Marcicki fell to Iowa’s Peter Nagy in a tightly contested 1-0, 2-0
match.
Another top performer for Michigan was Marcicki’s teammate Drew Garcia,
who was a Division 1 state runner-up this march. Garcia’s only loss of the
tournament came against Pennsylvania state champion Chance Marsteller, who is Intermat’s top ranked wrestler in the class of 2014. Garcia rebounded well from the loss, defeating Cody Law of Pennsylvania to finish in third place at 152lbs.
Also finishing in third place for Team Michigan was St. Johns state champion Zac Hall. Hall compiled a 6-1 record at 105lbs, with his only loss coming against the eventual champion Darian Cruz of Pennsylvania. Hall finished on a high note with a strong 6-1, 1-0 victory over Pennsylvania’s Dalton Macri in his final match of the day.
In the 119lbs weight class Hudson’s Cole Weaver had his best national performance to date, finishing in fourth place to earn All-American honors. Weaver’s only losses came against elite competition, dropping two close bouts against the eventual champion Aaron Pico of California, and FILA Cadet Greco Roman Champion Darius Henry of Illinois.
After going undefeated at the Cadet Greco Roman duals last month, Holly’s Anthony Gonzales had another strong Greco outing in Fargo. Gonzales, a 2010 state champion, won his first five matches at 125lbs before dropping a pair of close matches against the eventual champion JJ Chavez of California, and two-time New Jersey State Champion Anthony Ashnault. Gonzales rebounded by recording a first period fall against Alaska’s Ellery Steffensen to finish in fifth place at 125.
Rounding out the All-Americans for Michigan was Fowlerville big man Brian Moran. Moran proved himself to be a top tier Greco wrestler this spring with a runner-up finish at the FILA Cadet Greco Roman Championships. Moran’s Greco success continued in Fargo, where he put together a 5-2 record to finish in fifth place.
In addition to the six All-Americans, several other Michiganders also had significant success in the Fargo Dome. Macomb Dakota state qualifier Jake Johnson had a breakout performance, winning five matches and coming one win away from securing All-American status. Other notable performances came from St. John’s Logan Massa, Holly’s Mason Cleaver and DCC’s Riley Hanson, who all finished the tournament with four wins.
