Coon takes second step towards Triple Crown with Greco Title
7/17 - The Junior Greco portion of the Asics Cadet/Junior Nationals concluded
yesterday in Fargo and just like in the Cadet division, two Michiganders made the
finals. Also like the Cadets, one finalist came away with a national title.
Fowlerville's Adam Coon won his 3rd straight Greco-Roman National Title in Fargo
and won the 2nd leg of the USAW Triple Crown.
Coon won the 285lb bracket with a 6-0 record and scored a 1-0, 8-0 win over Josh
Marchok of Illinois in the finals. Coon's only three period match of the tournament
was 0-1, 3-1, 4-0 win over returning Cadet Greco National Champ Sam Stoll of
Minnesota in his pool finals.
The other finalist for Michigan, and the only other All-American, was Detroit
Catholic Central senior Kevin Beazley, who started the tournament off 6-0 with
dominant wins to capture 1st place in his pool and advance to the Championship
match. In the finals, Beazley fell to returning double all-american Sam Brooks of
Illinois 2-0, 1-0. For Beazley, it was his 2nd straight trip to the Junior Greco
Finals after finishing runner-up last year at 171lbs.
Fargo week continues Wednesday morning with Cadet Freestyle action, which will wrap up Friday afternoon. Junior Freestyle will begin Thursday morning, concluding on Saturday. Check back for updates.
