Friends of Wrestling Golf Outing set for August 12th in Oakland Township

After a year's hiatus, it's back.
The “Friends of Wrestling” Golf Outing is back after skipping last year because of lack of participation.
But Tom Russell, who wrestled at Hazel Park High School, and is in his sixth year of officiating the sport in Oakland and Macomb Counties, has joined up with officials Wayne Cupp and Chad Davinich to bring the golf tournament, which is now in its seventh year.
The outing, which is open to any “Friends of Wrestling” will take place August 12 at the Myth Golf and Banquet Center, located at 850 Stoney Creek Road in Oakland Twp.
“We had a lack of participation last year with only 18 teams,” Russell said. “We'd like to have a total of 36 teams. We have 18 signed up already, and that's with hardly any wrestling coaches. So we shouldn't have a difficult time to get the next 18.”
The cost to enter is $90 per person per four-man scramble teams. That includes 18 holes of golf, door prizes and a buffet dinner.
Money raised goes right back into the sport, with the majority of the money slated to buy gifts for the wrestlers that qualify for the MHSAA Individual State Finals and shirts for the volunteers and mat girls that help run the tournament.
“I've had a lot of experience with golf outings, so that's why I wanted to help out,” Russell said. “I'm pretty certain we can have a successful outing so that money doesn't have to be added for the gifts and shirts. In the past we have had to have donations to cover those expenses”
There will 1 p.m. Shotgun start. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
