Senior Nationals Day 1 Recap
13 Michiganders advance to Round of 16\
Senior National Coverage Home

4/3 - With the first day of action at the Senior Nationals in the books,
13 Michigan Grapplers still remain alive in the championship bracket.
Today's wrestling consisted of the championship preliminary rounds of
64 and 32 and tommorow morning action will resume with the round of
16.

Jared Germaine of Swan Valley picked up arguably the biggest win of
the day as he ousted Illinois state champ and Fargo all-american Joe
Roth in the 2nd round 6-2.  Germaine, who has commited to EMU,
may see Roth again in the future as he has commited to Central
Michigan.  Germaine will not have much time to celebrate his win as
he will square off with another Junior National All-American in Sharky
Slyer of Kansas tommorow morning.

Three Michigan seniors are still alive in the 119lb weight class with
Germaine, Kyle Waldo, and Grant Pizzo.  4x champ Waldo was
expected to still be alive, but Pizzo is a bit of a pleasant surprise.
The Brighton grappler who was runner up to Waldo this year will meet
Indiana state placer Casey Kenney tommorow morning in the Rd of 16.

D1 state champ Robert Nash of Roseville scored a big 1st round upset when he pinned 2x Missouri State Champ Kellen Bounous.  Bounous was 3rd in this event as a Junior last year and is nationally ranked by many publications.  Nash now has NY runner up Brian Herald tommorow morning.

2x state champ Adam Miller of Sparta advanced to the Round of 16 with a nice win over 3x VA state champ Daniel McGillravy.  The road for Miller will not get any easier as he will wrestle 4x Kansas state champ Tyler Caldwell in the morning.

Another big time match in the morning will be between two very big men as Holland West Ottawa state champ Mike McClure will face a big challenge in the form of 2x VA state champ and nationally ranked Andrew Miller of Virginia.  If McClure can take out Miller he will make a serious bid for himself as a contender to win his weight.
